Harmonized Sales Tax, Ontario
WHEN: Effective July 1, 2010
WHAT: A combined tax of five per cent GST and eight per cent Ontario sales tax. Prices on most items won’t change. Some consumer goods for children will still be tax exempt. Services that used to charge only 5% will now have to charge 13% sales tax.
WHO: Every Ontarion. The province of British Columbia is harmonizing at this time as well.
WHY: It will actually be more efficient for businesses to administer one type of sales tax, and this will save them money. Coupled with less PST within the supply chain, companies will be more competitive and be able to pass more savings on to the consumer.
If you are running a business, talk to CML Business Services before July1, 2010 to be prepared for the change.
